Red Chakra: Muladhara

The red chakra is the connecting force between people and the earth. It is considered to be the foundation of the chi. Its significance is important to meditation because people who have lost a strong connection with the earth often feel out-of-control, lacking purpose and out-of-step with the world and people around them. Luckily it is as easy as walking to keep the red chakra in good shape.

Keywords: Root, base, earth, passion, physical, material, survival, faith, foundation, lower body, territory

Color: Red

Mantra: Am or Kreem similar to "half"

Note: C

Stone: Rubies, garnets, hematite, obsidian and smoky quartz.

(Red and brown stones work the best with this chakra)

Location: The lowest point on the spine or tailbone.

When meditating to stimulate the red chakra sit with your legs crossed and the back of the hands resting on the knees or near the tailbone. The thumb touches the index finger with the other fingers relaxed. It is also acceptable to lay on the ground with the legs together and bent, so the feet connect with the ground.

The meditation can be intensified by having something red to focus on. Pictures can be purchased in new age or metaphysical bookstores. The pictures are made for the purpose of meditation. The images flow in away to stimulate the mind.

Repeating the mantra kreem or playing music composed in the note of "C" helps open the chakra. Remember to focus on the tailbone, while repeating the mantra. Fear is the opposite of the chakra, so as it opens let go of your fears.

When using the stones you can lay them on the ground near the feet, tailbone or genitals. You may feel more comfortable using a nonmetallic string to dangle the stone near one of the corresponding areas.

All of these techniques can help alleviate fear so a person can understand the world. It also strengthens resolve and improves relationships. The Earth is a large planet and we are all extensions of its existence.

Indigo Chakra: Ajna

The indigo chakra is the dream-maker. It not only stimulates the mind, it adds perspective to world through intuition and creativity. Associated with intellect, higher-learning and extra sensory perception or the third-eye it is on the forefront of enlightenment.

Keywords: Brain, third-eye, imagination, visual intelligence, dreams, intuition, higher-learning

Color: Dark Blue

Mantra: Vam or Shreem similar to "soft"

Note: A

Stone: charoite, hawk's eye, lapis lazuli, sugilite

Location: The center of the forehead

This chakra is accessed sitting or lying down. Cross your ankles to wear it feels comfortable. The left thumb touches the right thumb; the left index finger touches the right index finger, and so-on. It looks like holding an invisible ball.

Hold the hands as though forming an arch over the lower rib cage. Surround yourself with royal blue or blue-violet colors to give focal points. Wearing indigo shades of blue can also stimulate the chakra. Repeating the mantra on the corresponding key or listening to music written in "A" can be beneficial.

A hat or headband made of a natural fabric is the best method for holding stones close to the forehead or around the median of the head. The cloth should breathe and allow motion. Having a cap or head band that is too tight is restrictive and brings focus away from the meditation.

This is a tricky chakra. You must have a strong foundation for it to work. If you do not have a strong foundation to the red chakra or it makes people feel spacey. If the indigo chakra is out-of-balance it also makes people feel spacey.

When in balance a person can use their creative mind to make dreams happen. It allows intuition to combine with linear thoughts and broaden perceptions of the world into real and usable abstracts. This skill is applicable to learning. When concepts can be visualized, it is easier to retain the knowledge that is later turned into wisdom.
