Self-Medication and You

A controversy related to taking medication affects a lot of people's lives. Though several disorders and ailments can be cured with better lifestyle activities and cognitive exercises, medication prescribed by doctors is better than self-medication. It is complicated recognizing when to use prescriptions. Misdiagnosis may make someone completely mistrust medications.

Anxiety disorders are extremely common and can be controlled with diet and regular exercise. In Jerilyn Ross' book "Triumph over Fear" the appendix mentions avoiding stimulants, caffeine, when attempting to control panic attacks. Science progressed and people who under-eat are prone to anxiety attacks; therefore, eating enough everyday helps coping with anxiety.

Between trend diets and emphasis on being slender, both men and women are victims of nutritional habits. Men tend to want physical strength through athletics or working hard. They might have an extremely active life which constitutes daily consumption of 5,000 calories a day according to their BMI and only eat 2,000 calories a day. This means everyday health deteriorates while increasing fatigue.

Women tend to count calories until limiting themselves to one, well-rounded meal a day and avoid eating anything because they are worried about fat, sugar and oil until there is nothing to eat. Sadly, prolonged exposure to under-eating causes fear and reinforces irregular habits producing anxiety.

Exercise does not have to be intense; however, all activity regardless of at a gym, in the house, or at work constitutes calorie burning exercise. The book recommends tensing muscle groups and relaxing to practice relaxing. I enjoy sustained stretches. Sustained stretches are held for a minimum of fifteen seconds with at least five deep breaths. When feeling tension stretching helps fuzzy feelings and aches disappear. Then it is easy to compliment a light workout with regular work at the computer to produce an average workout schedule. Any regular workout light to active regulates the heart which is associated to deep sleep.

Overweight people also have anxiety attacks. When listening to people, eating make them feel comfortable. At some point they found eating relieves fear; however, fear is something everyone experiences. Everyone feels insecure or inhibited. If someone ate an entire meal every time they experience anxiety along with eating regular meals, there is only slight speculation on why they gain weight.

Self-medication extends beyond food. Alcoholism is also associated to relaxation or "taking the edge off." Though people associate fermentation with relaxation, alcohol is nutritious, including: natural sugar, vitamins and minerals. People are able to replace calorie consumption with alcohol or add it to meals, because they are just having a drink. Despite alcohols nutritional benefits, I do not believe we crave toxins related to vomiting or migraine.

Self-destructive behavior creates an obvious reason to seek prescribed medications. When a person is engaged in harmful behavior: whether under-eating, over-eating, alcohol abuse or drug abuse prescribed medication is probably better. Of course, we want prescriptions to help; therefore, it is important to give the psychologist or physician as much information to find a correct diagnosis. Taking excessive amounts of prescription drugs is also self-medicating.

Anxiety disorders are frequently masked by other ailments. Sometimes a doctor finds a physical illness. They treat the illness, yet anxiety continues. Frequently anxiety disorders are misdiagnosed as depression. People do not want to talk about fearful perceptions as readily as insomnia and feeling tired. It is a good idea to divulge more information. However, admittedly, I had an awful experience with psychologist. They were hardly any assistance. They were not even close to a correct diagnosis. I went to a doctor to discover I had hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism causes loss of memory and delusion. The doctor recommended me to another psychologist, yet I stopped sessions quickly and ended anti-depression treated immediately. They seemed to be making more problems than helping me.

Reflecting on my friend who committed suicide, I began to understand years later. Panic attacks were under-researched at the time. Blaming anyone would be futile; however, I think he was being treated for depression when panic attacks were the real problem. He expressed outlandish fears of harming himself or another person; having his whole life dwindle into nothing; rarely left the house, and made a lot of excuses. Another friend told me how he darted away from school onetime. The friend inferred it was as though he was fleeing cops and implied he sold drugs. Knowing him well, he shunned drugs and anyone doing drugs. It did not make sense. Feeling awful, now, furthering anxiety through unwarranted gossip probably affected him deeply and added to torment.

Anxiety disorders are treatable with cognitive exercises, such as: practicing relaxation, building more realistic expectations and becoming comfortable with anxiety when it happens. We have all felt apprehensive for no reason, felt overwhelmed with embarrassment or been overwhelmed by uncomfortable thoughts. Most people shrug it off. Sometimes additional assistance is important, even if being able to explain the situation to themselves and others with a realistic goal of being better soon.
